What is Platelet-Rich Plasma?
The procedure involves drawing some of your own blood (like in a blood test) and centrifuging it (spinning it very fast for about 8 minutes) so that it separates into the red blood cells and the plasma parts. The rich platelets are then extracted and injected into your skin.
This is done under a topical local anaesthesia (a gel or cream is applied to your skin to numb it before injecting). Most popular these days is a small local injection, with a cannula (blunt-ended needle) fed under the skin. Cannulas move blood vessels and nerves mostly out of the way, so with an experienced injector you should get very little bruising. Usually only a little swelling and slight redness will occur; we prefer to use this technique at Diamond laser.
On your second treatment it's great to finish with a Dermal Needling and stem cell serum to get a double-whammy effect. This can be discussed at your consultation. Diamond Laser loves to work holistically, from all angles, to give your skin the most effective results.
With our Platelet-Rich Plasma treatments you can address:
- crinkling skin around the eyes, cheeks & mid face
- jaw line
- chest and decolletage
- the neck (incredible in making older women’s necks look so much younger!!)
- the backs of the hands and arms (where we really show ageing)
The entire injection process is quick and simple, taking approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour in total.
PRP is enriched with your own platelets, stem cells, and growth factors. Once injected into your skin, these substances will accelerate the normal healing process via new collagen formation at the injected area. This process brings long-lasting tissue rejuvenation by your own cells. PRP has been widely used for many years in cosmetic surgery, orthopedics, dentistry, and in soft tissue and other implants.
How long does it last?
Depending on the health and age of your skin, 3 treatments, 4 weeks apart are usually required. This is followed by touch-up treatments. Although results may vary most patients’ results will last for up to 18 months. Results are not immediate – initially you will see and feel swelling from the fluid, then once the swelling has subsided you will not see much at all. Over the next few weeks, however, the platelets will stimulate growth factors which will assist in more collagen growth and over the ensuing months there will be more improvement in texture and tone.
